Bob--We are training there in mid May from Firenze. Budget? What's that? Usually we stay places in the $75-$100 nightly range. But this is IT, not Portugal or Ireland, or Spain. So we are up into the $100-/+ price range. This trip, we are hotelling it for the services, rather than apt.'s, etc. Suggestions?

"$75-$100 nightly range"
In Levanto, Villa Margherita is about $100 a night (maybe a little more now). Levanto is gateway to CT. Easy train ride to all five towns. Levanto is a nice base with good restaurants.
The rooms at Villa Margeherita are not the Ritz, but they are clean, and it does have a good, little complimentary breakfast and a garden. Fax or email Federico, the owner. You might have to do it a couple of times, because sometimes he doesn't return your fax or email right away. But he can be extremely helpful. When Lufthansa lost our luggage a few years ago, he manned the phone for us and got our luggage before we departed to Florence. Have a great time.

Just a note on the PortoRoca hotel rooms...most are waterfront looking down on the Med from a lovely height...
however there are several rooms at the back of the hotel which look out onto a rock wall ....they are not bad but have zero view,so I think a slight surcharge might be justified to have the front ones.
A pleasant location up a long stone path from the town. They will take your luggage up by cart once you register, so don't drag it up yourself...send the porter to your car or the train station. Rouss

Hi,
Although wonderful, I think the Porto Roco has gotten too expensive. Here is a good web site for hotel information on the CT.

Have a fabulous time.

I too really liked the Villa Steno. Nice hotel, nice people, great view--but be sure to request a view. My single had a balcony. Not a large room but tastefully done and a more than adequate bath--that also had a view. Breakfast was good and served on a balcony if you wanted--again with a view. I enjoyed my stay. Also at the time they gave a 10 euro discount if you paid cash and mentioned Rick Steves.

Yeah, Wondering, it seems that prices are spiraling up at an ever-astounding rate---even b-4 the hit to the deflating dollar. I want to blame Ric Steves, but can't. Its the "sherpa effect". That is, sherpas in the himalayas now wear down, not heavy wool, and that impact is from us-1st worlders opening their hrizons, even as they open ours...

I stayed in Albergo Barbara in Vernazza 3 summers ago for 60€ per night for a double room. There was no AC, the shower and toilet was down the hall (we did have a sink in the room), and no breakfast. The location of the hotel was great though - right on the main town square overlooking the sea. No elevator that I remember.
