If I had it to do over I would base my self in Santa Margherita because of the excellent hotel and dining options and day trip to the CT via train. Only about an hour trip each way.

To answer the questions about driving into Camogli and why would you consider it as a "base" for the CT. You most certainly can drive into it, very easily accessible from the highway and many options for parking there which is not the case with any of the CT towns themselves. In fact THAT was the reason we originally even looked at Camogli. The CT was only part of our 3 week vacation and we therefore needed to keep the rental car. We had heard that driving into and parking in any of the 5 CT towns is difficult. It was quite easy in Camogli. And Camogli, unlike some of the other towns people consider in that area is on the train line. We had no trouble parking our car near our hotel or near the train station and the very inexpensive and slighly less than 1 hour train ride was not a deterrent. That was why we chose Camogli.

But once we were there we fell in love with the town itself and I'm very glad we stayed there since we probably wouldn't have visited there otherwise. Also, since it's a little larger than any of the CT towns there were more lodging options.

Huh, mcmrjm, "grouchy"? Do I have to spell it out for you? My point is simply the same as others. If you want to stay in the Cinque Terre, then stay in the Cinque Terre, not miles away. This is no different that someone saying "we want to enjoy the Florida beaches, should we stay in Mobile, Alabama or Savannah, Georgia?" Huh?

I don't think my answer was grouchy at all.

Patrick, if you go back in this thread and find my post, there is no mention of my wanting to stay in Camogli while going to the CT. I simply asked if we could drive into the town. I probably should have started a new subject but since Camogli had been mentioned, I put my question here...Will you forgive me?

kmoncrief -you asked aboaut doing the CT as a day trip from Lucca. It seems like that would be possible. I haven't done that but I have been to the CT and at the moment I'm researching my upcoming trip to that area and spending a lot of time on train websites. It seems Lucca to the CT wouldn't be much more than an hour - although I don't know if you'd have to do some train changes. But if it only took you an hour or two you'd have plenty of time to see the five villages and even do a hike - as a day trip from Lucca. Train rides between each town only take 2-3 minutes (literally) and the two easiest hikes are less than an hour. I only spent one full day in the "5 cinque terre towns" and didn't feel rushed. If you wanted to do some of the longer hikes you'd want more time. It turned out that wasn't even an option for us as it had rained hard for two days before we were there (in July) and the trails were "closed". So no matter what you plan you don't always get to do exactly that anyway. We still had fun.

Patrick - I think you are misleading people by equating visiting Florida beaches and staying in Georgia with visitng the CT and staying in Camogli or some other town in that area. Come on, we are talking about less than an hour total travel time from my hotel room (in Camogli) to the beach in Riomaggiore. And when bobthenavigator said it was 100 MILES from Portofino I think he meant 100 KILOMETERS. It's less than 50 miles from Camogli to Riomaggorie. And the whole point of staying in Camogli (or Santa Marghuerita, etc) is the ease of the train versus driving into the CT towns and findidng parking etc. Obviously there are many reasons to stay IN one of the towns themselves, but don't make it look like it's crazy to stay somewhere else the area. There are plenty of positive reasons for that option too.

My point was nomenclature. The title was " CINQUE TERRA BASE". Both arguments have merit--staying in the CT versus another base location--but the question was about the CT as a base. And yes, I did mean KM.

zootsi & annabelle2 -
We were very interested in your assessment of Levanto. We would like to stay there two nights in May. We would love your recommendations for accomodations. We are more interested in the bargains than the big, expensive hotels. Thanks.

Lots of folks who have responded who are familiar with this area. Any particular recommendations for a hotel in SML?

To answer your question, in Levanto, we wanted to stay at Villa Margherita, on advice from friends, but it was closed when we were there (year and a half ago). Hotel Europa was clean, friendly, convenient, good breakfast, not fancy but comfortable room/bed and large bath. Rooms varied so good to check out a few if possible. We paid around US 70.00 night incl breakfast.

We stayed at the Hotel Jolanda in SML. It is about five minute walk to the waterfront but in a nice neigborhood with shops and excellent restaurants. Rooms were very nice and rates quite reasonable. Friendly, helpful staff. Ten minute walk from the train station.
