Yes . . . However this OP will be arriving with the day trippers on the train and leaving the next morning for their next stop. So not a lot of time to do any of those things you recommend. Two or 3 nights - relax, enjoy, wait out the hordes. But w/ one night they won't have that luxury

Yes, I was replying to the CT naysayers.
With a day, I'd take the boat to all of the villages and portovenere. I'd at some point visit the cafe on the hill in Manarola by the park/cemetery for the iconic view of Manarola that piqued my interest in the region. In the evening, I'd head to the winery up the hill in Monterosso and walk back into town and eat down by the water.
That would be a pretty nice day in my book, crowds or not.

It will take 2 hours or more to relocate hotels and transit time - you will not have a full day there if you will be leaving early the next day. So I'd consider a day trip from Pisa - enough time to see 4 of the seaside towns with train stations and ferry service - I did it from Florence. But by not having to pack up unpack and doing a day trip from Pisa will save you a couple of hours. So travel baggage-free on day trip from Pisa and back. I do think a single day in CT can be fun - I have fun on a day trip from Florence (but that was in January and nearly no visitors -just local inhabitants going about their daily stuff.

The pesto is wonderful and so enjoyed out hike though it was May five years ago. I will go again and hike once more. Stay the night, have your hotel store your luggage and get out there and hike early. I am not sure how late you can hike but that might be even better. The cruise ships were in port and many of them leave early.

Again -- they won't have 'a day'. They are taking the 90 minute train from Pisa to Riomaggiore, have to get to their hotel and check in or leave the bags, and wait for the next approx 1 per hour ferry. They will be really lucky to net half a day . . .

I think they will end up visiting the 4 train and boat accessible villages with a big mob in each - but yes that is to see today's CT in busy season. If detouring to CT try to spend 2 nights IMO - to make it all the more relaxing and see the CT sans the mobs of day trippers and have time to do a leisurely hike.

Portovenere
We are in Portovenere right now (some consider it the 6th town of the CT)....its been about 70 degrees the last 3 days, pure sun, some day trippers from about 11am to 3 pm....then the whole village to ourselves.....incredible restaurants, nice shops, outdoor markets, and the great hiking island of Palmaria a 4 minute boat ride away.....its been fantastic! Every morning you see the ferries pass by enroute to the CT....absolutely jammed with people! and this is off season! My advice research the area but stay away from the CT especially in July, There are other less traveled villages in the area with the same beauty and hiking options.

Macross,
No large cruise ships in sight.....I think we saw one near La Spezia on a walk thru the village.....the boats go by every day as I said en route to the CT, some stop in PortoVenere to pick up passengers.....and they are packed!.....we got here on Saturday....Sunday was crowded....today....we have the town to ourselves, which I expect for Tues and Wed as well....we leave for Pietrasanta on Wed.....but right now its incredible weather, still pure day light at 840pm....the beach promenade is little people traffic, gelato and vino al fresco it is!
