we are planning to buy round trip tickets from London to Paris return as we unbderstand it is cheaper than one way. , if on our inbound trip to Paris could we get off the train in Calais, rent a car and vacation in other areas but board in Paris bound for London.

If the train stops in Calais, yes. Most Eurostar trains don't.

More likely to stop in Lille, which is a nicer city than Calais anyway.

If you want to hire a car in Calais and make your own way to Paris you would be better to take a ferry to Calais. Dont know for sure but I have never been on a Eurostar train that stopped at Calais. Eurotunnel trains do of course so you may also like to consider hiring your car in England and use Eurotunnel to cross over.

There are about four trains a day from London to Calais, currently taking about 80 minutes.

Which is about the same as the ferry takes to get to Calais from Dover, though getting yourself and luggage from central London to a ferry at Dover takes a few lifetimes, significantly reduces how long this one will last and costs rather more than a cheapo to Paris.

Hiring a car in Britain to take to France at best incurs monstrous markups. In addition to the cost of transporting the car.

Lille is more fun (and much better served by London trains) than Calais: getting a car out of town from the city-centre hire point near Lille-Europe is a great deal less pleasant than collecting a car from the out of town Calais-Frethun Eurostar station.

Hi S,

Your one-day RT L/P ticket won't let you depart Paris on any other day.

The lowest RT fare to Calais is about $80.
One way is about $260.
