Christmas Nuremberg/Bavaria
Hi All
I am starting a new topic as we changed our plans slightly and rather settled on Nuremberg area - as their Christmas market is the biggest and will still be going on the 24th December.
We are traveling from Dublin and will arrive in Memmingen on the 22th of Dec. We will take the train to/from the airport to Nuremberg and will depart again on the 27th.
As mentioned in my previous thread we are a 30 year old couple looking to spoil ourselves for Christmas and would appreciate anything in the Christmas spirit.
We will probably visit one of the smaller nearby markets eg Bramberg, Wuerzburg, Regensburg on the 23 of Dec but we would like some suggestions for "Christmassy" things to do on the 24th/25/26. I know its a public holiday on the 25/26 and that most things will be closed but during my search I came upon this christmas package
http://www.maritim.com/en/hotels/ger...-new-years-eve
that suggest opera at the theatre for example that sounded like a great idea - we would love to do that whole package but is a little pricey.
We are also looking for a restaurant/hotel that offers a fixed price 3/4 course dinner for either christmas eve of christmas day. Or if anybody knows of another hotel/guesthouse that have a cheaper Christmas package that includes a dinner - that will also be helpful.
We would also visit the toy museum and attend church on Christmas eve.
Thanks in advance for all you suggestions

Yery nice but tiny airport. Public bus to the train station for 2.50€. I was very impressed with Ryanair and their flight from Memmingen. You can park your car right at the gate (no joke), the distance between the plane and my parked car must have been below 100 meters. Autobahn exit with a MCDonalds for breakfast very close too. Wow!

Hope you get some good answers!
Imho, those christmas markets are boring, been there, didn't like them. Commercial ... This chistmas spirit (as a non christian I can say) you won't find anywhere unless you bring it with you. So for that, you don't need to travel anywhere. On the 24th you stay home with yout family, right?

Well we don't have any family close to home - they are in other countries - so it is just me and my husband.
Looks like we will be staying in the hotel Elch - very reasonably priced.
I would like somebodies opinion on the trains. We will land in Memmingen take the train to Nuremberg. Then do a day trip to Wuerzburg's Christmas market with the train and then take the train back from Nuremberg to Memmingen. Would you suggest getting the bavaria train pass or will it be cheaper to buy the tickets point to point.
Thank you

We spent Christmas in Freiburg in 2007 while my daughter was studying abroad. We arrived in time for the Christmas Market. It is a pleasurable way to stroll and spend a day. I did not purchase much, but enjoyed the ambiance very much. We went to the local Munster for midnight mass for Christmas Eve; I HIGHLY recommend finding an old church and joining in! It was a wonderful evening of spectacle and song. We booked a prix fixe diner and show at a nearby hotel for our Christmas Day dinner. It was very pricey, but it was a once in a lifetime Christmas dinner, right?? We had a fun evening. Much of the city was closed on the 25th and 26th. We went for long walks and spent time in our own hotel restaurant and bar. I remember that Christmas very fondly! Have a wonderful time! Nurnberg is a great city!

Dont forget to twiddle the rings:-
People line up to turn the ring in the Schoenebrunnen. Legend has it, a nobleman's daughter once fell in love with a blacksmith, just a poor commoner. The blacksmith asked for his love's hand in marriage, but the nobleman merely scoffed at him. He told the blacksmith to prove himself as a true master of his craft, and then he would consider letting the blacksmith marry his daughter. Not much later, a seamless brass ring was found in the middle of this monument in the Market Square--seamlessness being the mark of a true master craftsman. Just when the nobleman was having a change of heart towards the thought of his daughter and the blacksmith, the blacksmith disappeared, never to be heard from again. They say that if you turn the seamless ring 3 times with your love, you'll have a love that endures the test of time.
I twiddled the rings a while back and it seems to work!!!!!!
