Remember than in Salzburg "smaller and more manageable"can translate into much more crowded. The city has become far more crowded at peak periods (including Christmas) even compared to just a few years ago.
I was in Salzburg last week-end and was really dismayed at the crowds in the heart of town, esp compared to what they were like in previous visits. A few shopkeepers said the summer and the holiday periods are now more crowded than even they expected.
If you and your kids haven't been to Salzburg, by all means visit. The crowds don't mean you can't enjoy Salzburg, but realize there will be plenty of other visitors as well.
For our next trip to Austria, most of our time will be spent in Vienna and then we're going to Graz instead of Salzburg.
