Choice Between two Montreux Hotles
Hello,
Thanks to all the great advise on my previous thread, I’ve narrowed down my search for an affordable hotel in Montreux, Switzerland between the Hotel Masson ($86)and the Hotel Splendid ($110 a night). The Masson has some good reviews on Fodors and several on Tripadvisor.com; there’s not too much available on Hotel Splendid, but the few available on Tripadvisor are positive.
I’d love to hear from anyone out there that’s familiar with one or both of these places.
Thanks.

Hi johnz323,
Do you care if the hotel is central? The Masson is about two miles (maybe more??) from the train station in the suburb of Territet/Veytaux. If you like quiet, it'll be great, and you can go back and forth by foot along the gorgeous promenade, by bus, or by ferry.
Hotel Splendid is quite central. In fact, I peer out at the main dock from their webcam about every day.

Hi again,
Oh yes, it'll be easy to get around, as I said (foot, bus, ferry, train, or even rent a bike)! And I really prefer that end of the lake. You're close enough to walk to Chillon, and if you have time, you can walk on to Villeneuve, my new favorite lakeside town. You'll be close to the funicular that goes up to Glion, and from there you can go farther up to Rochers-de-Naye by train.
Have fun!

I'd chose Splendid because of its location right in town, but that doesn't mean it is better for you.
I've seen both, not stayed at either because I'm lucky enough to have a friend who lives there and puts me up (or puts up with me!).

Stayed at the Masson and will go back. I loved the old-world charm and the quiet position - try to get a room with lake view (probably slightly more expensive).
Bus stop is 200 m down the street - the bus runs every 10 minutes and it is a very short ride into town.
I did not like their dinner, but the breakfast was very good.
