Filmed in Burgundy in the medieval village of Flavigny-Sur-Ozerain.
Binoche's other film, Horseman on the Roof was filmed in Aix-en-Provence.

As far as I know, the entire movie was filmed in France. The town itself is Flavigny, in Burgundy. The river scenes were filmed in Beynac in the Dordogne.

The website www.imdb.com is good for this kind of question. See http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0241303/locations

I don't know what scenes were filmed (outdoors) in England. The credits make it sound like all the studio work was in England.

Best wishes,

Rex

I asked about "The English Patient," her other popular film.
Let us not forget, "The Incredible lightness of Being."

Thanks for the prompt replies. Looks like I can really check out the scenes here. I'll be in Beynac in April and in burgundy in august. Must see the movie again.

Julie, you might also want to do a search here. I know when Chocolate was first released there were a couple (or at least one) very lengthy posts about the locations here on Fodor's, including some much more specific facts about the places.

The English Patient was filmed in Tozeur and Tunis, Tunisia, and several locations in Italy.

Cinecitta in Rome was where the studio location is, where interior shots on sets were shown. Other areas in the film in Italy were Sant'Anna in Camprena, Pienza.

Large parts of it were actually filmed outside of Eygalieres. My neighbors - and their horses - were extras in the film, and let me tell you, watching them leave in the morning in full costume in a horsedrawn cart was like taking a step back in time !

Watched Horseman on the Roof last night and really enjoyed it. The sceanry was beautiful. Wondering where the chateau in the final scene is located.

Ronda, not sure where. At the time the film was introduced here, I read it was filmed mostly in Northern France but the roof tops were in Provence in the Village of Cucuron (that has a great but way too expensive restaurant, IMHO.)

The church scenes in The English Patient were filmed at the monastery, Sant' Anna Camprena, just across the little valley from the house we rented in Castelmuzio (pop. 250) this spring. In fact, some of the scenes looking toward the monastery were filmed from the garden of the house where we stayed.
