Its not a youth hostel, but it is cheap, quiet, and in a good location (I stayed there for 50 euros/night):

Hostal-residencia Lausanne, av Portal del Angel, 24, 08002. The local phone number is 93-302-11-39.

what is a "chip" hostel"? Somewhere with a fish fryer maybe?

If you mean "cheap" then may I refer you to:

www.hostelworld.com

An American site - I wish I could recommend something that wasn't - but that's life.

You could also try hostelbookers.com

Or google Bug Europe.

Or try hihostels.com (this perhaps is not American and is therefore highly recommended)

But when push comes to shove - why are you posting here on Fodors? This is a board for cash rich Americans.

try www.lonelyplanet.com

But even that, once the preserve of the independent traveller, is being taken over by Americans - mainly ignorant - but that's life - nothing to be done is there?

Is there???

In Barcelona it's more difficult to find cheap hostels or even youth hostels. YOUTH hostels are definitely cheaper than hostels but there, of course, you'll be sharing bedrooms and bathrooms.

Most of the cheaper hostels (called "hostales" in Spanish and "hostals" in Catalán - the regional language) are with shared bathroom facilities 'down the hall' and, in some cases, are not located in the best area or have the best reputations.

If you're looking for YOUTH hostels, here are a bunch with websites:

Best of luck and enjoy your visit to elegant Barcelona!
