Thomas Cook has international calling cards for about 17 to 18 cents per minute. I know from previous experience that the calling cards purchased from Sam's Club do not work in all areas of Great Britain.

Thomas Cook is based out of the UK and have never had a problem using them anywhere ... especially in some of the smaller villages in Scotland and in Cornwall.

The cards come in increments of 30 -60 and 120 minutes.

If you are traveling to the UK I highly recommend them.

I travel throughout Europe two or three times a year and never call home anymore. I simply set up a hotmail account (also have a yahoo account) and I can get my e-mail including messages forwarded from my home isp via the hotmail account at any computer in the world. I leave a list of all the hotels, dates and phone numbers so that I can be reached in an emergency and I have an AT&T pre-paid calling card for emergency use if needed. Why waste money on daily phone calls?

Larry J

Larry - if I was travelling without my husband, I certainly wouldn't think phoning him every day was a waste of money. Emails just don't have the same effect as actually hearing a loved one's voice.

Thank you again everyone!

Rex - I do like your idea and I will probably check it out when we are in London. Thank you.

I have a feeling we will most likely end up with the phone cards. It just sounds simpler right now. I will check out cognicall and Thomas Cook mentioned here too.

Xenox - Yes, thank you for understanding, I am so torn about leaving right now, especially my husband. You are right, phone contact is so important to me right now.

I use our MCI calling card. We have the International option ($2/$3 a month extra, but you can include it or drop it as needed). I called from UK, Germany,France, Italy, Singapore, Thailand and the most I was charged was .10 a minute. Most important ..get the local access numbers for each country before you leave US. You can get them ove the phone from wherever, but it's a pain to do so. I called several times a day, everyday and it did not cost much. I used hotel phones, street phones, house phones, other people's cell phones, etc. no problem. FYI..with the wrong plan, my calls from Florida to NY cost several times as much. Needed to change that!!
