Cheapest way to get to Sicily
Does anyone know an inexpensive way to get to Sicily from Chicago? I've heard that if we fly to Rome and book a flight to Sicily at the Rome airport it will cost half as much as prearranging a flight in the US. Any ideas?
Thanks!
Thanks!

If you can book a cheap Rome flight, you can take one of these airlines to Sicily:

I think there are other airlines, maybe someone else can post those.

I don't think there is one simple all-purpose answer to this question, especially without knowing which month.
There are international flights into/out of Catania from Brussels, Paris, and several German cities. Palermo has international service to/from CGN (others?)
So, it depends on sales, and what gateway airport in Europe you can reach most cheaply. Of course, on Alitalia, you might get a true "through fare", maybe even true with Air France of Lufthansa (though for some reason I doubt it).
The threshold for fares to/from Sicily ought to be at least $99 USD or less, based on multiple offerings at that price on www.europebyair.com
Good luck finding out about options available only once you get TO Italy.
Best wishes,
Rex

Try "Alpi Eagles". Seems to me that they do not have US agents, per se, so it is not so easy to dial them up on the web if you do not know their name. We purchased tickets via the web direct from them, trip was Venice to Catania. Seems to me the cost was about $90 two years ago.

Hi Mooshi,
We took Alpi Eagle too from Milan-Palermo. You might want to check out the Alitalia site. They fly there for sure and so does Meridiana Airlines. Find out the price from the states before you book. The euro is high right now, and you might get a better deal if you do it with your original ticket to Rome. Good luck,
Melissa

I would include in that definition of "inexpensive" the time it takes to change airlines and the inconvenience, etc; whether or not the connector will allow you to fly the usual amount of luggage weight, etc. You might also try looking up the Rome-Sicily segments on www.opodo.com and see what that reveals, too.
