The best - and really only viable - route is the Speed Link coach service that connects the two airports. If you are connecting on the same airline, they often provide a voucher for the transfer.

Cheapest may be taking the tube from Heathrow to Victoria station, then the Gatwick Express to Gatwick. M.

Actually the SpeedLink coach costs less than the Gatwick express, so it would be much less than taking the tube plus the train - plus it woul dbe faster.
