Cheap eats in London
Don't overlook the churches for convenient and inexpensive eating places. We had afternoon tea at the Cafe in the Crypt at St. Martin's in the Field, just across from the National Gallery. The bread pudding was delicious. Also had a nice lunch in the crypt at St. Paul's Cathedral. These cafes have good soups, sandwiches, quiche, salads, puddings, cakes, etc. and you can choose as little or as much as you want. We also noticed a cafe/refectory at Southwark Cathedral.
I have never eaten in a church. How does one go about this? Is it similar to eating at a cafe where you pick out your food then pay for it? Do you need special permission to go to the eating area? Where I live churches do not serve food. The priests just eat at their home.

Could you explain this a little more? Thanks

Cafe in the Crypt is good,so is The Wren at the St James Church..we had an excellent vegetarian feast one wet cold day. There are many pubs that have the old fashioned dining rooms for ladies and children, where you can sit and be waited on and it is very affordable.

Julie-The Cafe in the Crypt is downstairs in the Church and they have a big room with a gift shop and a small cafe.To get to the Wren you walk into the Church grounds and around the side, into the door of the cafe,it is also small, you stand in line as in a cafeteria, then take a table. The food is very good.

The Stockpot is great for good, inexpensive food. There are several locations in London and I have heard that some are better than others. We ate at the one in Knightsbridge several times on our recent trip. It is not fine dining, but more than adequate.

don't overlook the Belgo restos...

GREAT beer, great food.

if you get there b/w 6-730 pm, the price of a 3 course (I think so, correct me Kavey?) course meal with wine is the "price of the time" ordered... (i.e. order at 6 PM, 6 pounds for the meal...)

Beth
