Hi All,
I'm travelling to Europe and I will be there for one month. Does anyone know anything about low-cost, yet nice hotels in Italy, Nice, Barcelona, Paris?

I welcome any advice,

Thank you,

Maxx

The first and foremost internet resource for researching hotel sin Italy is www.italyhotel.com - - also known as www.venere.com or www.venere.it - - I take it that you are trying to figure out where in Italy you want to go, and hotel cost is part of that decision-making process?

Two other useful resources are:

www.charmerelax.xom
and
www.karenbrown.com

While there are surely other sources for CHEAPer hotels, these provide some of the best VALUE.

In the general vicinity of Nice, I recommend www.logis-de-france.com - - I have forgotten what they have IN Nice per se. I enjoyed a stay in the Logis at Grasse (Plascassier) once, but I don't know how you would like an entire week there. A little removed from any "major" attractions.

In an earlier post, you mentioned SOUTHeast Spain. Barcelona is NORTHeast Spain. Not sure which one of these is not what you meant.

And I have never been a good judge of "cheap" hotels in Paris. The March issue of National Grographic Travler has attracted a lot of attention for its feature articles on "22 hotels under $100". I think there are at least partial lists of those hotels on this forum. Try searching "Geographic Traveler" perhaps.

Best wishes,

Rex
...that this is a violation of the www.fodors.com policy forbidding "commercial promotion"?

Unless she is just a very generous person, and has an apartment that she wants to offer to us for free...

no more mister nasty (for a while)...

best wishes.
For Paris, try hotelboulevard.com
where you can search (and then book), by price or area, and get pictures. I used them just a month or so ago and was very satisfied - they're quick and efficient.

But...what is your definition of 'cheap'?

Stayed twice for $60. a night in Nice at the St. George. It is a short walk from the railroad station and an easy walk to all sights in the town. It is very clean and has air conditioning. In Paris we stayed once at the low cost Hotel Azure, across from the Gare De Lyon, and easy walk also to everywhere. Check out rooms for some are better than others, cost was $80. Both hotels are on the internet and have e-mail and are good to deal with.

In early March, my wife and I stayed one night in the Hoel Albert 1er in Nice. It is about a block from the beach and the Promenade des Anglais. The rooms were OK, not particularly quaint, bathrooms fully equipped. The hotel is not new but had everything one needed for a place to stay. My two complaints are that the walls were a bit thin and the hotel had no parking of its own, though there are several parking garages within a few blocks. The cost before taxes was 500 FF per night -- remember this is in early March, you don't say when you are going. I am sure it will be more expensive and more difficult to get a room in the summer.

Another web site for finding hotels on the riviera is

http://www.businessriviera.com/

Have fun,

Hans
