charges for rental car crossing borders (France and Spain)

Does anyone know if there is quite a large charge (or any charge) for driving over into Spain from France in a rental car?

There's no charge whatsoever to cross over a border. There's not even anybody there to see you do it. It's when you rent a car in country X and drop it off in country Y that you incur a charge.

Hi Steve,

No, I've never heard of such a thing. I took a two week trip to France and Spain this past summer and didn't have any issues. We were prohibited from driving into Andorra though (don't know why) but on our way into France we went through a major border crossing and weren't even stopped (no one was,) and on our way back on the mountain roads there wasn't even a border marker!

I've never had a charge, but last year we rented a car in Berlin, drove to Prague, and back to Berlin. There were certain nice cars Hertz would not rent to us because we were going into the Czech Republic.

If you literally mean driving to Spain and then back into France - then no there are no charges of any kind.

But if you mean renting a car in France and dropping it in Spain -- then there can be huge drop off fees.

There is no charge to cross the border. The rental agency will charge you to pickup in one country and drop in another. How much depends on the rental agency and the type of car - larger or luxury cars are usually much more.

The major rental companies do not charge for cross border use.

Some of the smaller companies charge an increased CDW excess insurance for cross border use. This can be expensive over a long rental.
