Cesky Krumlov to Salzburg
I will be in CK in late May 2005 and want to travel to Salzburg for a couple of days. Is there a bus I can take? If a bus is not available I guess my next best option is train. Response from anyone having any experience or advice getting from CK to Salzburg would be appreciated.

KC, we traveled from CK to Munich in October and here's what we ended up doing. There apparently is no bus that goes from CK to Austria, so we planned to take the bus from CK back to Budejovice to catch the train to Linz, where we could pick up the train to Munich. However, the bus from CK to Budejovice left very early (about 5:30 am) in the morning, and we would have had a long lay-over on the train route between Budejovice and Linz. Our B&B host phoned the local CK taxi service to check the fare from CK to Linz and, although I don't remember the amount of the fare, the cost for the taxi ended up being about 24 USD more for the two of us than the convoluted, time-consuming bus-train option. We left CK about 9:30 am, arrived at the Linz station in plenty of time to catch the train (OBB EC 162, departs Linz at 11:13, arrives Salzburg at 12:30) to Munich. By the way, this was by far the very nicest train we've ever been on in Europe! We wanted to take it all the way to Basel, but had to get off in Saltzburg to change to our Munich train. The taxi driver was knowledgable and pointed out points of interest as we traveled through the Czech countryside. The ease of this trip option was well worth the additional $24 USD.
In retrospect, knowing what I know now, I would have taken a taxi from CK to Passau to pick up our rental car there instead of Munich. The additional rental car day would have been less expensive than the train fare from Linz to Munich.
Hope this information is helpful to you. We loved CK! It should be beautiful in May.

Betsy,
Thanks for the reply. I have reviewed the train schedules and, like you said, it is a convoluted mess. Wherever I stay I hope the people are as helpful as those at the B&B you stayed at. Thanks again.

KC, I am a female traveling solo, and I, too, have been trying to work out the best way to go from CK to Salzburg late May, 2005. I was thinking of being in Prague from May 19, 2005, to May 26, 2005, and then spending two nights at CK. I have not made any of my reservations yet. Before seeing your question, I thought perhaps I would fly into Salzburg, train to Vienna, then fly to Prague, then down to CK, and then retrace the route back to Prague and then home. I was wondering if perhaps we could share a cab to Linz, or even Salzburg. The hotel where I am thinking of staying in CK, according to what I have read, has a driver that will take you wherever. I have not checked this out yet. If we shared a cab or a driver, it just might solve a problem for both of us. What is your thinking on this?

Orchid68,
I will be in Prague May 12 through May 16 and will spend the nights of May 17 and 18 in CK. I will be looking for a car/cab to Linz on May 19 so it looks like our dates are not compatible. If you hear anything on the cost of the drive from CK to Linz let me know. I will do the same.

KC, I just looked back through our travel notes. The cost of the taxi from CK to Linz was 1500 CZK. Here's the taxi info: Krumlov Taxi +420 380 712 712. www.krumlov-taxi.cz. It might be a good idea to let someone who speaks Czech to make the reservation for you.

KC, It is a shame that we will not be in Kesky Krumlov at the same time. It would have made the trip to Salzburg that much more interesting. I received the rates from Hotel Ruze. Their rate for a taxi is higher than the rate stated on the Internet for the taxi. The Internet rate -- if it is up-to-date -- for the taxi is 1450, which is approximately $65, give or take, and the rate to Salzburg is 4490, about $200, give or take. For the difference I guess I will be taking the taxi to Linz. I have some questions about the train from Linz to Salzburg, which I will be posing to Betty later. Have to run. Wishing you a year full of wonderful trips and all of the other good wishes. I can't wait for May and I can be on my way. Have a Healthy and Happy. ellie

I started with http://www.vlak-bus.cz, and found a Monday to Friday service thus:
Cesky Krumlov bus station 0720, Kaplice bus stop 0738. 5 minutes walk. Kaplice railway station 0855, Summerau 0941. Then I turned to the Thomas Cook European Timetable, which may be in the reference library of a city near you. It shows that in Summerau you wait from 0941 to 1114, change at Linz 1221 to 1233, take a buffet car train, and reach Salzburg at 1252. You can leave 15 minutes later, at 0735, but that gives you one more change of bus. The total fare might be 60 euros, but you will buy bus tickets to Kaplice separately from rail tickets, and in Kaplice will buy a ticket just as far as Horní Dvorište at 0924. There you need crowns ready to buy on the train the extra miles to Summerau, where you have ninety minutes to buy your ticket to Salzburg, and a coffee. This cuts fares to about 50 euros.
