Cell phone question

Does anyone know if a cell phone that worked in Australia will also work in Europe?

Yes, I am Australian and have a Digital phone which works perfectly in Europe.
I did have to advise Telstra the first time I travelled to have Global Roaming activated.

Australian mobile networks operate on the same GSM frequencies as do European. Thus if your Australian provider allows roaming, you can use the phone as is in Europe. If the phone is unlocked, you can switch SIM cards and use European pre pays with the phone.

Australian global roaming is expensive.
I agree with xyz123 - ask your provider here to ensure your phone is unlocked (vodaphone told me all their recent phones are) and then just buy a local pre pay package when you're in Europe.
Many of them will work in other countries. If you look at Cellphone and Paris you'll find lots of other posts.

I know an Irish one works in Austrailia and NZ so yes they are compatible. I do not know about putting other pre-paid cards in unless the phone is set up in the home country that way. If you are Vodaphone for example in Australia check Vodaphone at home and in a euro country mail their customer service and ask if you can use a pre-paid card. Most have regional websites like Vodaphone.co.UK and Vodaphone.ie.

here's what I found on global cell phones--you'll have to look around the site for the global rates; the posting shows just rates for Europe.

No problems at all for a digital with a Sim card. I bought a prepaid Virgin sim card when I got to the UK. Worked like a charm & no problems. Just make sure your phone isn't locked. Using Telstra Global Roaming is very expensive - especially if anyone phones you. Plus you have to give if anyone is calling within Europe, they have to phone Australia.

SIM CARD DETERMINES THE PHONE NUMBER?
SO A SIM IN ITALY WILL HAVE A DIFFERENT PHONE NUMBER TO SEND TO USA, AS, SAY, ONE PURCHASED LATER ON IN PORTUGAL????

Since the 3410 is a DCT3 phone, you'll need either a cable and WinLock software to read the GID1 and GID2 codes, or the GID1 may be available depending on what country/network the phone is locked to.

Take a look here: http://www.unlockme.co.uk/dct3free.html
