I always keep video autoplay switched off, even when I'm home. If I want to see a video, I'll click on it.

Kandace, I think your teens were either watching video or uploading large photos. Even navigation couldn't use up that much data. An hour of Google navigation, when driving, would use about 6 mb. Walking would use much less, because data services are needed only when the map needs to be updated. Driving, it would take about 500 hours to use a gb.

As someone pointed out, you can download your maps in advance, and then navigation will use no data at all. For that matter, there usually is no urgency about watching videos or uploading photos, so I would do those things only when I had wifi.

Thank you all for your feedback. I've realized that my daily navigation apps--waze and google maps--(and mileage tracker) may be eating up a lot of my data. I'll have those items off while traveling, so that should cut back on some of the data usage.

I think I'd like to get a SIM in each country with 1-2GB of data. Does this seem feasible?

I purchased a multi-country Global Unlimited SIM card from Mobal on Amazon for $59. It's good for up to 30 days. We visited France, Poland, Netherlands and Iceland and it worked well in every country. Phone calls cost extra but we used it exclusively for data and texting only. It has to be set up before you leave the US so we registered it online about a week before leaving on our trip; as soon as we arrived in France it was ready and working. I preferred having an "all-in-one" SIM card so I didn't have to search one out in each country.

Mrs_Wilde, I can't find the SIM card you mentioned, so I can't compare it to the KeepGo card I mentioned above. Could you provide a link?

In any case, I think the Keep-go would probably be no more expensive than buying different SIM cards, and would certainly be more convenient.

Options like the one mentioned by Sparkchaser, but with more data, wouldn't be available to Nicolette, as they're add-ons to an existing plan. Since she's starting in Athens, maybe someone knows of an appropriate Greek plan.

Sorry, realized after I posted that the card is listed as not available now on Amazon.
