Bill, we have bought discounted tickets on other airlines BUT you are at the total bottom of the standby list--after the buddy passes and all. Haven't done it internationally.
And I think when answering a similar question a while back, someone said AA did not board on seniority. So I guess it is on the basis of when you list?

Great info rkkwan on Heathrow. I think purchasing a cheap flight to London and then trying to nonrev from there sounds like the best option.
As far as I know AA boards by classification: D1, D2 (spouse, domestic partner, dependent children) D2P (Parents), and D3 (passes given to friends).
