You can cancel the CC today, but you are still responsible for any charges before. I believe the stores will back date the tax charges to the day of sale, so you will end up paying it, unless you want to screw up your credit.

I believe AA is right. I had a friend a few years ago who cancelled a credit card, forgetting there was an outstanding charge (I don't remeber all the details but something about a deferred purchase)
Anyway - Visa contacted him and when he didn't pay, a collection agency took over.

Darn! I can't seem to figure a way out of this--
I may just go ahead and try the way Ira suggested. I didn't actually declare these items, just an amount of money when we entered customs. I made a mistake on my first form, so I do have an extra one, but it wouldn't have any stamp on it.
I don't know what the Retail Export form is and I have no idea where the nearest French consulate is here in upstate New York, although I suppose I could google it...hopefully, I wouldn't need to drive several hours to show them the goods.
I will also try to contact the stores. The people I dealt with were very nice, but I am not too hopeful that they will want to go out on a limb for me, not to mention lose their cut on the money.
Maybe that website can help...
Sounds like cancelling the CC would be pretty much a waste of time.
Thanks--if anyone else knows anything, I'm open to suggestions...

Hi cybertraveler, I have been reading your thread with interest.
What would I do? I would forget about it. I have found out that life is to short to get in a turmoil over some money. And I say that with knowledge as this summer I got ripped off to the tune of $2,000.00. And NO I couldn't afford it. But couldn't afford all the stress, the time, the aggrevation etc. to try to recoup it either. So I am just chalking it up to "a lesson learned".
Anyway dear one, that is what I would do if I were in your shoes. And know probably a lot of people would not agree with me. Whatever you decide, best wishes that it works out for you.

Have you tried calling US Customs? Maybe they have a suggestion.
Ira, as usual, you come through with a clear sensible answer quoting the correct source but I gotta admit that Robes had the answer I liked the best. Both of you guys are classics!

LoveItaly, I love your style. I think I'm going to just chalk it up to experience and not drive myself crazy about it. As my DH says, "It's just the cost of doing business."
Thanks to everyone for the great suggestions. I'll be a bit more savvy next time!
