Does anyone know of any nice castles to visit, for kids etc, near Frankfurt, besides Heidelgerg(been there)

Amy,<BR>You might consider the Rhine valley between Mainz and Koblenz. There are any number of impressive castles. Some are in ruins but the castle in Marksburg, never destroyed, is impressive as are the castles in Stolzenfels, Boppard, St. Goar, Oberwesel, Sooneck, Reichenstein and Rheinstein.

Amy, I have heard that the Frankenstein castle is pretty close to Darmstadt. I have not had much luck finding information yet however.

I suggest you head north along the Rhine as Wes recommended. You'll see many castles starting around Bingen. Burg Rheinstein just north of Bingen can be self-toured in a short amount of time, and it has a great view of the river. Try to get to St. Goar if you can, the best place for kids, perhaps; Burg Rheinfels above the town is a set of castle ruins that is great for crawling around and exploring. Take the ferry across the river to St. Goarshausen and head to the very north end of town to Burg Maus Castle, which puts on a falconry exhibition within the castle grounds at 11:00, 2:30, and 4:30 every day. It's fascinating to watch the birds soar and swoop in free flight, and the scenery is terrific. The best-preserved of the Rhine Castles is Marksburg in the town of Braubach, north of St. Goar. Great tour, a real look into medieval life.

Larry,<BR>Well, now. There's a bunch of castles once you get past Munich. Three of King Ludwig II's castles are at Herrenchiemsee east of Munich, Linderhof almost directly south of Munich, Neuschwanstein to the southeast in Schwangau. Also in Schwangau, you'll find Ludwig's mother's castle home, Hohenschwangau. There's a castle, now a youth hostel in Rothenfels, between Frankfurt and Wurtzburg, another at Mespelbrunn about 38 miles west of Wurzburg and the Johannisburg castle in Aschaffenburg. In the immediate vicinity of Munich, you'll find the Nymphenburg Palace, Schloss Schleissheim and Schloss Haimhausen. There's also a 16th century castle in Dachau.<BR>They should occupy a few of your days!
