Castle in Tuscany
My head is spinning from all the info I've found on the many different castles in Tuscany. Want to stay INSIDE a castle, if possible for 2 nights. Many have 7 night min. stay and others only offer accommodations in buildings outside the castles. Any recommendations? So many of them look wonderful! Hoping to spend about $100-$120 US per night. Thanks.

While it won't necessarily help you get a faster or better answer - - it would be great if you could list here some of what you've investigated so far.

That's one great thing about this forum - - it's an incredible repository of not only places someone has visited - - but also even places you may have only read about.

I could tell you about a place in Orvinio (not to be confused with Orvieto) - - which might take you on a night-to-night basis. It's sort of a castle (you might call it a "plaazzo" alternatively). some parts of it are a litte run down. It's privately owned, and the owner doesn't seem to really have his heart in it - - fixing it up properly for overnight guests. He mostly seems to use it for local functions, weddings, etc (thus, not overnight guests, and no INdoor facilities for food or beverages for groups of any size).

But it's not in Tuscany - - in Rieti - - 45 minutes due east of Rome. The region is what I imagine Tuscany may have been like 60-70 years ao, before the "Chianti-shire-ization" began.

Best wishes,

Rex
Thanks Rex. Coincidentally, I'm staying at the Rex Hotel in Rome. Ref the castles, I found a great website called charmingitaly.com. Click on "charmingtuscany" then "castles" and it gives a list of 20 castles with lots of details on each. I've emailed all of them and ruled out only 7 so far. I think I may have narrowed it down to Bibbione, Cafaggio, Ripa d'Orcia, San Felice, Pietraio, Meleto, Palagio, Cassero and Corno - - - WHEW! I'd love some help.

I'm booked at the Meleto Castle in Gaiole in Chianti. Going early May. I had to pay a bit more than I hoped (Euro 144), but was the only one I found with the room inside the castle - rather than just on the grounds. I'll let you know how it was when I return.

Lynn
