Cassis and the Calanques

I would love to hear some opinions on how fun/interesting people have found Cassis and the nearby Calanques.

I am having to make some tough choices on my Provence itenerary - need to determine if these places are worth the trip.

Thanks

Cassis and the calenques were to me one of the most gorgeous stretches of Riviera coast when i rode my bike from Marseilles to Nice - Cassis in its calenque - what a lovely scene in a Riviera that is surprising at many points for how tacky the coast has been developed. Go for it!

From our villa in St. Remy, we did a daytrip to Cassis with a boat ride to the calanques. It was okay, but not worth the day I thought. And the others agreed with me.

rholt, I enjoy them very much. A picnic on the rocks is a wonderful way to spend an afternoon.
Click on each calangue and judge for yourself.

We took the boat trip up the calanques. While the calanques themselves are beautiful, the tour was entirely in French which we unfortunately don't speak that well.

Some of the photos I took last December when Mistral was blowing hard and cold. You cannot imagine on this sunny photos. I did only once the calanques by boat from Cassis that was not bad at all, unlike one poster and his/her friends above, otherwise I did many of them on foot starting from Marseille or Cassis. Altogether I did about 7 times in last 3 years so obviously I love it !

Thanks Cigale. Hiking on the calanques has been my preferred activity in recent years even better than in Swiss Alps mountains.

If you are doing it on foot and are coming from Cassis, try to go at least as far as Port-Pins (Port-Miou is the closest) and if possible till En-Vau that's the one people often say the best of all calanques. Lots of walk but worth it. My photos above are of Sugiton, Morgiou, etc that are accesible fom Marseille side, they are gorgious too.

I wish we could hike them as you have.

Will be traveling with a 5 year old and a 3 year old. We will have to see them from the boat.

Oh, ok, enjoy anyway. I just think you will find their beauty on foot better than on boat. If you do it both ways, that would be even better, as I did ;-)
