James,
I live near Sorrento and I know very well these places because, often, I go to buy mozzarella di bufala.
So, rental car is a fine solution.
From Sorrento highway to Castellammare for Caserta. From highway exit to Caserta, you cross San Nicola La Strada, a not nice town: to avoid it.
Caserta deserves visit its Royal Palace and its park: magnificent, don't miss it and don't be in a hurry.
At least four hours.
Then you go to Sparanise, a small town on a low hill.
You across an ancient town named Capua and you can taste and buy mozzarella di bufala: don't miss it.
From Sparanise to come back Sorrento you can take highway to Capua and exit is Castellammare di Stabia.
Anyway, I am here: feel free e-mail me if you need more help.
Have a nice trip.

vincenzo,

thank you for all of your kind replies. we have set up our italian itinerary with much of your advice.

it appears that we may want to skip santa nicole la strada as it is not a very nice town.

is it dangerous or is it simply in poor condition?

sparinese sounds like it may be a worthwhile stop.

thanks,

james

James,
the only worthwile stop is Royal Palace in Caserta.
I strongly suggest to don't miss it. It's so rich, so wonderful and its park so magnificent.
I visit it more than one a year and every time I discover some new thing.
Besides it, Sparanise is good enough only because it's on the right way to buy mozzarella di bufala and, now I'm thinking, also olive oil from the oilmaker Monti della Torre: an excellent olive oil second only to Olivicola San Lupo, in my opinion.
I am here, anyway: don't worry !
