avalon, I'm not familiar with that. I just googled it and it seems the Carte Orange is no longer used. Do you know if it starts the day you buy it for the week? The Carte Orange was only good Mon-Sun (as I'm sure you know).

I did not look at the site posted, but if after reading it yhou need more help, I just completed all this when in Paris in December. I was able to load it for one weeks use while there..great..so convenient.
I will be there for a month arriving mid April. I will have to re-load it weekly, as for the month, you must do it the first of the month.

I think we are going to be running into more and more problems with our "dumb" credit cards and increased need for the "smart" card.
Have not seen anything about our changing...

I don't think you're going to run into more problems with the chipless credit cards...what you see now is probably what you're going to get.
In theory, at least if there is a clerk, 99% of the credit card terminals are set up to take both chip and pin cards and the aniquated magnetic strip cards although sometimes, especially off the usual tourist trail, clerks may not be aware and have to be shown how to swipe the cards.
As far as US banks going chip and pin, it is most likely they have done a study and found their losses due to fraud are far less than the cost to convert all the terminals and distribute within the USA chip and pin cards.
The interesting thing is that studies have shown that chip and pin has cut fraud losses a tad but nowhere near where they thought it would. And chip and pin is useless against the major source of fraud and losses i.e. the internet.

It is as you stated..training the working clerks.
We were in a small outlet shop on r. St. Dominique in December. My friend had a number of items and her card would not work. The clerk said the new machines had recently been put in. She knew nothing about anything! If you wanted to buy, it had to be cash without the chip card!

Hi, I am a newbie to traveling anywhere outside the US. I live in CT. We are planning to travel on august 2-9 to Paris and do have a shuttle from the airport to our hotel. Our french is from high school (I'm 52!). so I thought we needed carte orange cards but now I hear we need navigo cards or do we need both. Is there anyway to buy them at Charles De Gaule airport when we arrive? Or to get them from the US. Also if we want to travel to Giverny and to Versailles , do we get zone 1-2 and buy extra tickets for the giverny,versailles trips or increase our zones? Is it difficult to get around using the subway/busses? We will be staying in Montmartre at Hotel Villa Eugenie. Thank you for any help you might give us.
