Caron de Beaumarchais

Has anyone stayed at the Hotel Caron Beaumarchais in Paris in the Marais? Any comments?

I don't totally agree. Sure, the reception lounge is quite charming, there are plush bathrobes in the bathroom, nice amenities, the location is lovely, but the elevator is incredibly small, as are the rooms. One can barely walk around the bed, what turns packing and unpacking into a nightmare.

MaryC, ry Hotel de la Bretonnerie, it's quite close, and it might have available rooms.

Regards,

S

Thank you, Surlok! But what is the price range? Is it similar?

I think so, Mary. I've stayed there about three years ago, and found the rate quite reasonable. We had a triple room, and our stay was over the New Year's Eve, hence, more expensive rates.

Here are the phone and fax numbers:

Hotel de la Bretonnerie
22 rue Ste Croix de la Bretonnerie
Tél. 01 48 87 77 63
Fax 01 42 77 26 78

Otherwise, the hotel is available to be booked thugh many web site. Here are the Google results I got:

http://www.google.com/search?q=hotel+de+la+bretonnerie&source-id=yahoo-b

Good luck,

S

Mary, in fact I think the Bretonnerie rates are slightly lower than the Caron's.

Check the rates ( and the reviews as well):

http://digital.france.com/hotels/hot...ml?HotelID=459

Surlok, I tried booking thru ParisHotels.com but was told they were full up all 3 weeks.

I do have a confirmation on the Latour-Mabourg but I'm not sure we want to spend 165 Euros per night, however they also have an opening at the sister hotel, Hotel Valadon (near Rue Cler) for 110 Euros (both owned by the Orsennes). Should we snag it?

Mary, from the pictures I saw, the Valadon appears to be a lovely hotel, looks like was recently refurbished, at an excellent location. Plus, the rates are great and include breakfast. No doubts I would book it!

Amazingly enough, Surlok & Virginia, I received a reply from a hotel agency (RentoParis - Monica Lambert) this morning for a twin at 128 Euros/night. Does anyone know if this is a reputable place? Perhaps I should contact the hotel myself. (The Hotel Valadon still looks good -HELLO, one block away from Rue Cler!-and I'm dealing directly with Maria Orsenne).

Virginia, the hotle agency's e-mail address is [email protected].

Happy Travels ~MaryC : )

Do you mean for the Valadon, Mary? The Hotel has a web site, I would try to contact the hotel directly.

http://www.hotelvaladon.com/

There's a hotel close by, La Motte Piquet if I'm not wrong, that S. Flower has consistently recommended. I believe the rates there are lower. Have you checked this one?

LA MOTTE PIQUET
30,Av. de la Motte Piquet
01 47 05 74 36
350/440 FF

Actually, I meant for the Caron de Beaumarchais. However, I've already been in contact with Maria Orsenne of the Latour-Maubourg and the Hotel Valadon. We've decided on the Valadon. Hopefully the rooms will be larger. : )

Anyway, Virginia, good luck to you on your search. Rentoparis should be able to help you.

I stayed at the Caron in 1998. It is a very nice hotel. Rooms are small but at the price quite satisfactory. The service is most professional. Location, right near the Ile St. louis and Notre Dame, and amenities are excellent.

We have booked there again for May of this year.

Good luck.

Hôtel Caron de Beaumarchais is a favorite place for so many people that I know. Located on the Right Bank in the 4th arrondissement,it is not far from Place des Vosges Hôtel de Ville(Paris city hall). You should find the hotel within walking distance to many of the sites. As already mentioned here, it is very small. There are only 19 or 20 rooms, and the rooms are tiny. They are exquisitely decorated(for some tastes) and much of the 13th century features of the place are intact. The hotel is in a fairly busy area of Paris so if you can, ask for a room away from the street if you sleep with your windows open. Otherwise, the windows are double-glazed and keep any noise out fairly well. I have been told that the owner has a master's degree in art history from the University of Paris. Both he and his father have been in the hotel business for a very long time. They have a small but very good staff of people who speak English and are extremely pleasant and helpful. Whatever they are doing it keeps them coming back.
It sounds as if you are not going to book this hotel, still I would suggest it if someone is looking for a decent charming hotel to stay.
Sincerely,
Michael

Virginia,

Did you decide to stay at the Caron de Beaumarchais? I received confirmation from Rentoparis on the 2nd & 3rd weeks in April, but have declined them. They seem reputable. Happy Travels : )

Mary,
I do indeed have reservations at the Beaumarchais, but not until August. I am debating on whether spending the extra money on this place as compared to our usual spot, Grande Hotel Jeanne d'Arc, which is about half the price. Rooms at the Beaumarchais work out to be about 200/night CDN, so I'm not sure that I want to splurge for 15 nights on a hotel I have never tried. Albeit, they have a/c; I've been to Paris in August before but can't really remember how hot it was for sleeping, etc. Needless to say, I have reserved both places and now have to decide. Thanks for your input - if we end up staying there, I will be sure to write a review!

Ah but it has such a good reputation. Fodors has it listed as a Fodor's Choice and it was listed in my Charming Hotel Guides-Paris as a very charming hotel indeed. I think if I had more money to splurge that I would stay there. But we opted for fewer amenities on this trip (but didn't sacrifice cleanliness, friendliness or location) and stuck with a couple, The Orsennes, who have a fine reputation for hospitality.
The Caron de Beaumarchais must be nice if one has to book months in advance (or is that silly conventional wisdom - like new empty restaurants that turn away diners to cultivate a feeling of exclusivity and thus bring diners in droves?).

I do understand your dilemma.
