The last time I rented in Italy was 2 years ago, Hertz booked through AutoEurope. The experience end to end was seamless.
We were also able to get a wifi unit free with our Hertz gold membership - that was a fantastic bonus as the 5 of us could all use it for texting, maps, sightseeing info, etc without having to use cellphone data. That was all before Hertz bankruptcy, and I have no experience with Hertz since then.
My last trip was a US domestic trip and I also used AutoEurope - saved me a bundle on a 2-week one way rental (Budget) and once again it was seamless. I had to buy a wiper for the car mid trip and AE reimbursed me the cost quickly once I got home and submitted the receipt.

I think you will find some changes, like higher rates (but that's everywhere) and no more Hertz with Auto Europe in Rome. You might book now and watch rates and cancel or ask for the new rate later if it goes down. We recently did a longer term car lease in Rome, available through Auto Europe with three car manufacturers under a Car-2-Europe program. I believe that requires a minimum of three weeks. It was fantastic.
Regardless, we have always found Auto Europe to be the best in price and service.
