Car Rental: Pickup in Spain and Dropoff in Portugal
Has anyone had any luck with this? AutoEurope's site says that there may be additional fees to pickup and dropoff in different countries. So far, everyone seems to agree that AutoEurope has the best prices. I was just curious if another company may be cheaper with this dual-country situation. Thanks for your help.

This is not an easy problem to deal with, as far as I can tell. In 1993, I lucked out and by pure chance found a spanish car at one of the Lisbon airport car rental counters, by simply asking. I had been scheduled to fly on a little fly-by-night airline Lisbon-Sevilla, and the airline's employees were on strike "indefinitely".

I think your chances are going to better finding a spanish car in Lisbon, than a Portuguese car in any random city in Spain. If you can plan your trip with several days in Lisbon, with a plan to leave there to go to spain, you might try simply asking at each counter to notify you if they get a Spanish car. A haphazard plan, admittedly, but I am not sure there is a betetr one - - besides biting the bullet and paying the drop charge.

Best wishes,

Rex
We had the same problem in Nov of last year, going from southern Spain to Lisbon and with the drop off fee ranging from 400 to 550 depending on who you ask we finally just rented in Seville from Avis ,kept it 5 days, dropped in Malaga and flew to Lisbon.Air was only $99.

Don't know if this willhelp you with your dilemma or not. The last few trips we have used Nova car rental out of Ireland. Their prices have consistently been cheaper than AutoEurope's and we have been extremely happy with their service. We had a problem on the trip and they couldn't have been more accomodating.
