Hi
How long will you be staying in Italy? Are you planning on checking out places like Rome and Florence? What kind of car are you looking for?
Regards

Thanks for the replies.
We plan to be in Italy for 2 weeks. We've been to Venice, Florence and Rome so thought we would try to see some of the less urban areas of Italy. In particular, we want to spend some time in Tuscany and enjoy some day trips (and the wineries of course). We haven't been to Naples or Pompeii so thought they might be possibilities as well.
Bill Boy's advice that a two country car rental would be pricey makes sense. We only thought of arriving in Nice so we could drive along the coastline to Cinque Terre. Any other suggestions are greatly appreciated.
We haven't booked flights yet so our arrival and departure choices are flexible.

You could fly to Nice and train to Genoa, and get a car there to drive south.
The only way you save on car rental from another country is if you can return it in the same country. We did that flying into and out of Nice, and another time flying into Milan, training to Lugano, Switzerland, getting a car, and reversing the process at the end.
