Car Rental at Mulhouse/Basel Airport
I plan on flying into Mulhouse/Basel Airport on British Air and renting a car to drive exclusively in Alsace. I would appreciate guidance on any tricks to exit airport into france. I am having trouble renting an car via Hertz with automatic transmission on the French side, they only show standards but have automatics on their Basel list. Any advice on how to navigate this?

BA flights land on the Swiss side of the airport. To exit on the French side, when you exit customs, just follow the arrow for France, and having shown your passport, you will come out on the French side of the terminal. You will find car rental desks straight ahead, near the exit door of the terminla building.
As for getting an automatic car, French rental cost will be considerably less than Swiss, and no, they cannot fetch the Swiss automatic car for you as there is no vehicular access in the airport complex. Try booking via Auto Europe or other brokers who can guarantee an automatic on the French side.

Why not just hire the car on the Swiss side?
True, getting from there into France requires a (?10 mile?) detour. But if you can get an automatic, and they're cheaper anyway, the detour should be well worthwhile.
Last time I did this, the French border took all of 5 seconds to cross.

Hi R,
Call www.aautoeurope, www.novacarhire.com and www.gemut.com.
Ask them about renting in CH or FR.
