The car will give you more freedom to visit small villages , although you will not want to use it once you arrive in larger cities.

You can easily get to sevilla, granada and cadiz on public transportation. However, it is nice to have a car to ramble around the smaller towns. Perhaps part of your trip a car, and the other use trains/buses. Parking and gasoline are very expensive, as are speeding and parking tickets.

Malaga is a very nice city. I agree with lin about a car. Seville and Cordoba are easily reached by very comfortable train, but for some places buses are the only connection (would not be my choice).

Malaga city is your public transport hub, so please qualify - do you mean you will be staying in Malaga city or somewhere on the Costa, and if so which town? Best direction and transport can then be advised.

Excellent public transportation in the region. From the new train station in Málaga (María Zambrano) and the close by bus station you can easily go to almost any town or village of any size in Andalucía.

A car would be perfect to explore the fabulous inland landscapes, mountains etc.

Remember that Málaga itself is a wonderful city, and at this time of year you might want to spend much of your time at the coast. http://www.andalucia.com/cities/malaga/

Maybe go just east of the city center to Pedregalejo for the freshest fish and seafood in one of the many affordable waterfront restaurants. Also nice beaches. Both the restaurants and beaches are very popular with locals.

Seville and Cordoba are easy to travel to by train. To Granada or Ronda you must take the bus. The bus station is next door to the train station. Once in those cities you wont need a car.
To Cadiz I am not sure, but I believe Bus is the best option. It drives along the coast and maybe you can board where you stay. Check here: http://www.tgcomes.es/horarios_3.htm
