Car in Positano?
(Sorry for the duplicate but my original post did not go the the Italy forum)
What is the general consensus on having a car while in Positano? It will be in October, and the stay is for 3 nights only. Probably will not go to Pompeii.
The stop before Positano will be Florence, and the stop after is Rome so the choices would be the following:
1)Train from Florence to Naples, taxi/car service to hotel in Positano. When we do leave Positano, taxi, bus or ferry
2)Train from Florence to Naples, rent car in Naples, drive to Positano, keep the car, drop the car at Naples for train to Rome
3)Rental car from Florence to Positano, keep car, drop Naples, train back to Rome
I dont care too much about cost differences, just what makes the most sense logistically. We will be 2 couples traveling together.Any thoughts? Thank you!

Firstly, does your hotel in Positano have parking? If not, then you don't really have choice but to use train and car service. We rented a car (2 people) from Rome and drove to Sorrento and Positano.
The best thing about having a car is that it's very flexible, but driving in small towns (very tiny roads once you get off the freeway) in Italy is very hairy.
My husband is a good driver, so it worked well for us. We loved that fact that we were able to drive to nearby villages, towns aswell. If you do rent a car, just keep it for the duration of your Positano stay and then drive it back to Rome. (You can pick up the car from one place and drop off to another place).
Another caution, when driving back to Rome, either you have a GPS or very detailed directions - lots of people get lost trying to get back in Rome. Lots of one one-way streets etc...
We've been to Europe three times and only went by train the first time.

As noted above, if you opt for the rental car it is essential to arrange parking before you arrive in Positano and take a copy of the arrangement with you.
We had a car and we do enjoy the freedom it provides as we travel. That said, we left it in the garage for three days in Positano. This is one area where you can't just 'go for a drive'.
If you are going to be traveling by train anyway, perhaps it would be better to consider the taxi/shuttle service.

Positano for 3 days? We were there last year for 4 days and didn't need a car. We did day trips via a ferry to Amalfi and the isle of Capri . I arranged a pick up from the Naples train station which took us directly to Positano. Arriving in Positano by boat is breathtaking but that will depend how rough the waters are. We stayed at the Villa Rosa. The view from our terrace was to die for. We had dinner on our last night at Donna Rosa and I will never forget that place nor the fantastic meal we had. Be sure to go for a walk to "San Pietro" . You won't be diappointed.
Hotel of celebrities. Enjoy. I can't wait to go back.

Yes, the hotel we are staying at (Eden Roc) will have parking. Funny you mention Dona Rosa. We plan on dining there for my birthday. A friend who is obsessed with food and been to Europe many many times told me it was his best meal to date. We are looking forward to it
