jubilada - unfortunately, you are in the minority - especially when it comes to discussions on travel forums.
All those who recommend using agencies located in New Jersey or elsewhere in the US, where funds are collected in the US and revenue and taxes are not declared and paid in France, or where a portion or all of the rental fees are collected in cash on arrival, are actively participating in money-laundering.
Though many people compare renting illegal vacation apartments to jay-walking (everyone does it, so it's OK), you have to admit that this is a much more serious crime.
Thankfully, the Senat has adopted measures which will require greater transparency on the part of anyone who wants to list illegal rentals in Paris.
In the near future, anyone wishing to list a vacation rental will be required to prove the listing is legal (revenue declared, taxes paid in France), before it can register with the City and appear on the internet.
