If your purpose is just to get there, you're much better off on the train. Quicker, less stress, great views.

Depends on teh time of year, what you want to see enroute, your budget, etc. Sure you can drive it - but it really isn't recommended in the winter. If just getting to Edinburgh is your aim, fly - it is fast and cheap. If you want to see some country along the way the train is great. And if you want to stop overnight in Lincoln, York or Durham - then driving is cheaper.

You can drive the Motorways - but you won't see as much. OTOH, you can stop detour along the way.
Much like the interstates in the USA, the M-ways have rest stops. Many of them have "motels" - very reasonable, L39.95 two years ago; and even an 800 number to make reservations.
We found this convenient. We left Stratford about 6PM, stopped near Lockerbie about 11PM. Left there about 9am, and I think we were in downtown Edinburgh before noon. Took the winding country road diagonally from the Motorway, and stopped once to watch the lambs bouncing around the hillsides. (baaaah!)

When motoring, it beats fighting your way into a city center to find a hotel; or feeling you're rousting someone out of bed at midnight in some family B&B.

Take the train! It is an exhausting drive and not worth doing unless you are stopping along the way to see other places. England is not as tiny country as you may think. The best way would be to fly one of the cheapie airlines like easyjet or go or Ryanair.
