Can a vegetarian survive in the Czech Republic?

We're leaving for three days in Prague and then a trip through the Czech Republic, East Germany and Austria. Do any restaurant menus offer vegetarian dishes?

I just posted this on another thread. The restaurant did have vegetarian selections:

The Orange Moon Thai restaurant is highly recommended for lunch. It was full of locals, mostly young professionals. It is located between Josefov and Staromestské Námestí.

Survive, maybe. But is life really worth living without decent food (=meat)?

This is just one of many sites that list vegetarian restaurants in Prague. I'd do some web searches for your destinations and print some options to carry along.
There are lots of vegetarians all over Europe and you'll find plenty to eat.
Prague is gorgeous, Vienna is too. Wish I could join you!
Have a great trip.

JeanneO,

Sadly for those of us who love vegetable cuisine, the historic cuisines of Europe have moved away from their grain and vegetable peasant origins to the meats of the wealthy.

But, consider that classic Czech cuisine includes the following:

- potato soup (bramborová polévka or bramboračka)
- garlic soup (česneková polévka or česnečka)
- sauerkraut soup (zelná polévka or zelňačka)
- dill soup, made from sour milk (koprová polévka or koprovka)

- boiled potatoes (vařené brambory)
- roasted potatoes (opékané brambory)
- mashed potatoes (bramborová kaše)
- French fries (bramborové hranolky)
- rice (rýže)
- bread dumplings (houskové knedlíky) or potato dumplings
- (bramborové knedlíky) with sauce (omáčka)
- bread or potato dumplings with sauerkraut (zelí)
- potato salad (bramborový salát)

Not to mention mushroom soup, dumplings, cheeses and eggs.

There are a lot of pizza places Prague , some very good Italian restaurants. One popular Czech dish ( not everyone's taste) is breaded and fried cheese.

Hi,
Sometimes when we tired of meat, my daughter ordered a plate of broccoli with a cheese sauce. All restaurants also serve salads.

Where else are you going in the Czech Republic? We just returned from a fabulous trip through the CR.

Danon, did you try the breaded & fried cheese? We saw it on every menu but never did order it.

OP asked about Czech Republic but most seem to have replied about Prague. e.g. Orange Moon is a well-known Thai restaurant in Prague. JeanneO, where in Czech Republic are you visiting? In a big city like Prague it's easier to get vegerarian food. There are a few, not many, vegetarian restaurants in Prgaue (sorry again this is about Prague, not about C.R.). There is one called Lehka Hlava (Cleah Head). This one looks interesting and often well reviewed. I am not a vegetrarian but prefer light food so maybe will try this place one day.

You could also try a search or post your question on tripadvisor.com on Prague or C.R. forum. There are locals and frequent travellers who answer there.

Kwoo,
yes, but I had it before (in Croatia) and liked it.
It is served with tartar ( or similar) sauce.
I like cheese in any form!

When we were in CZ (and visited large and small cities), our daughter (the vegetarian) didn't have a problem. As mentioned, though, she had more options in places like Prague than in smaller towns - but she definitely didn't starve.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. We will have three days in Prague on our own and then we go with VBT and the bike trip visiting Cesky Krumlov, Borsov nad Vlatvou/Divci Kamen, Sumava Naational Park in Passau, Schlogener, Wachau Valley and Vienna. I'm not too worried about the food with VBT since they know we don't eat meat and will have made accommodations for us. My concern was Prague, but I think we'll be ok. Sorry Zeppole, but the classic Czech cuisine does not appeal to me at all - too heavy.

During our seven days in Prague, my vegetarian DW ate well and enjoyed the Czech twist on vegetable based dishes.

we ate here the night we went to the opera in prague:

http://zahradavopere.cz/index.html

the food is a lot lighter and more modern than most you'll find in Prague and they have vegetarian options.

the opera was great too.

regards, ann
