Had been thinking of staying in Lavenham Priory - but now I think it might be too expensive.
Anyone know good accomodation in the area with some character and not too expensive? Can anyone tell me about the Olde Bull in Sudbury?

If you live on or near the US East or West coast, try to get to see the "Constable: Great Landscapes" exhibition before you go to Suffolk. (National Gallery of Art, Washington this autumn and the Huntington in San Marino - no not the one in Italy, but the one in California - early next year)
I'd always dismissed Constable as the bloke who does things on the front of chocolate boxes. Never again.
What he does better than anyone anywhere is remind you about our wonderful cloudscapes, and how they affect how the countryside looks. On days the small-minded dismiss as "bad weather" (those glorious summer days when there's cloud, bright sunlight and a few showers all at the same time), you have to look at the sky in prime English countryside just as hard as at the chiaroscuro in the fields. this exhibition gets all that down to a T.
For anyone reading this who's in Britain right now, there's still a week left of the exhibition at Tate Britain. I'm certainly going back for a second dollop.
And if anyone's planning touring Suffolk: download the Constable country maps from http://tinyurl.co.uk/fldm

My holiday will include the August bank holiday. I'll probably be driving in rural Suffolk at the time. Is this a poor idea on a holiday weekend? Or would the roads be reasonably negotiable in Suffolk? Also, how is train travel in the region on such a weekend?

You shouldn't have any big problems on the roads or trains. If anything, the A14 can be less busy than normal, thanks to the absence of commuters, and less freight traffic. Once you're onto minor roads, there should be no problem.
Popular destinations such as Lavenham and various coastal towns can get busy, but not to a state where you need to avoid them. And some of the trains might be busier than normal, but none will be overcrowded. And some will be empty!
