Cab Fare in Rome
My wife & I are leaving for Italy on 9/4 for our honeymoon. Can someone help us with how much it should cost (in Lira) to get from Rome airport to the main train station? We're heading to Venice first and I don't want to get "taken" by a foreign cabee on our first day! Thanks so much!

We've found Rome cabbies (in official, authorized cabs) to be quite honest.

Ballpark, ITL75,000-90,000. Alternatives abound though, including train direct from airport to the main station (Termini). I normally argue for a cab after a long transatlatic flight, but if you're going to Termini anyway, the train may be your best bet, at under USD10 each.

Info on these options and more at www.twenj.com/rometwob.htm#transport

Neal, be sure you take an authorized cab. There are guys who work as a cabbie to earn a bit of extra money. They have unmarked cars, and they will approach you before you get the the authorized cabs (obviously).

I personally wouldn't take a cab from the airport. The stuttle train is cheaper than a cab and the station is easy to locate in the terminal. It was about 16,000 lira pp in 1999(a cab will be 80,000 to 100,000 lire).

The shuttle train drops you off in the Termini station, and the clerks or the automated ticket booths are right there if you still need to get tickets to Venice. Rome to Venice is approx 4-5 hours. Take the vaporetto in Venice to your hotel if your staying on the island, it's a great introduction to the city!

Yes, it is a good idea to ask the driver what the fare will be.
A few years ago, we found the cab drivers in Rome to be fair and honest (though suicidal in their driving habits). I think I do recall that the fares vary slight according to the time of day, how many people you have, and how many bags. But, as I said, just ask first.
