I have gotten good advice from Fodorites on the trains, but is there anyone out there who has purchases tickets in Italy recently? what was the cost? I trying to figure if it is better to buy on line or at the station.

I am travelling from Venice to Florence, then Florece to Rome, but would like to do some side trips, to Pisa and Verona.

Please help me if you can.

I was travelling in Italy for the last 3 weeks and bought all my tickets either the day before or the day of travel. The prices seemed the same although we were buying family tickets so we got a 20% discount.

Florence to Pisa cost about 30 euro for 2 adults and 1 child
Cinque Terre to Venice was 85 euro for the 3 of us (this included one leg on the eurostar type train)

I cant remember the rest off hand but I do know the prices were no more expensive than when I checked them a few weeks before we left.

Price tickets on Trenitalia by entering a date within the next 7 days. Their website doesn't seem to process purchases unless you have a European credit card.

If you can buy online, the price is the same as at the station except that there are discount fares good up to about 24 hr in advance.

You can buy all of your tickets when you arrive in Italy.

Regular online tickets are discounted 5% so walk-up prices will be 5% higher. The discount fares for 24 hour advance purchase no longer exist except for one which is a same day round trip only on certain trains. All other discount tickets require at least 7 day advance purchase.
