Buying clothes in Florence

Hello all,
Just got back from shopping for a suit...told the salesperson that I wanted a very good quality black suit to wear to a sort of fancy wedding...tried several and during our conversation I mentioned that the wedding was to be in Florence...she then said that I should buy the suit in Florence, seeing it had been mostly Italian suits that I had been trying on...I said that I would only be there for a few days before the wedding and felt that it would be a considerable risk to try that...would those of you with experience/expertise please comment?
Thank you for your time,
Mike

We were in Florence just this past May. There is fabulous shopping for menswear, and I know we passed a number of stores -- even those that looked quite high-end -- where you could purchase a suit and extraordinarily beautiful shirts and ties. Sadly I can't recommend any by name...but honest, the centro historico is small and easy to walk around and I don't think you'll have a problem. You'll probably be able to visit a wonderful museum or church while the tailor makes any alterations. Oh gosh, this really does seem to be a man/woman shopping thing -- women generally take on this kind of challenge as delicious opportunity, while guys want to go to a particular place and get it over with. However it is very cool that you're concerned about looking your best for a fancy wedding. I think you'll be fine waiting until you get there -- and if your spending US $$ you should even get a good buy.

Mike,

Maybe these links will help you:

If you want something really special, the best clothing design for men, look for Ermenegildo Zegna:

Piazza Rucellai, 4/7R, Florence
Tel. 055283011

The prices shall be outrageously expensive, but Zegna is the best Italian designer for men.

Good luck, and have fun in Florence,

Surlok

Thank you for the information...I may have mislead you...I cannot afford a "high fashion" Italian suit..the ones I was looking at here...at an outlet store..were between $275 and $400...is that price range possible in Florence?
Thanks again,
Mike

I think so, Mike. I have a friend in Milan, he dresses nicely, and he seldom pays more than 200, or 300 dollars for a suit. But you'd need advise from local people to find out where to shop. I've notice that the stores on the southern part of Florence tend to be cheaper than in the vicinity of the Duomo, or Via dei Tornabuoni, or even Ponte Vecchio, but a local would be a better adviser.

Anyway, good luck, and have fun, despite the suit,

Surlok
