We took the train and it was really really easy. There are 2 lines that go from the airport, both go to the main train station and the old city. The ride takes about 40-45 minutes. There were 2 of us, so we bought a partner day pass for something like 15 or 20 euro. The covered our ride into town plus any public transportation later that day.

If you are staying in Schwabing, I think you would tranfer from the S-bahn train to the U-bahn train, but that will be easy.

I would agree. Take the S-bahn. It's fast, convenient, and doesn't get caught in trafffic jams. A one-way ticket is €8,80 per person. That would not only get you to the main station, but to anywhere else in the inner zone using other MVV conveyances. A partner day ticket is €18 for 2 - 5 people and not only covers your transportation to your hotel, but any other transportation by the MVV conveyances the rest of the day.

IF you happen to be staying in Schwabing (e.g. Hilton), the Lufthansa Bus (actually Autobusoberbayern) goes directly there. However, the fare, €10 per person only covers the bus. For any additional travel in Munich you have to buy an MVV ticket.

In fact ONLY S-Bahn stops at Rosenheimer Platz - and you have direct connections from the airport to this station (S8 and S1 lines, each line running every 20 min)
