Bus Service Along Lake Garda's WESTERN Shore

There is year-round bus service along Lake Garda's beautiful western shore, from Riva to Desenzano. Three bus runs Monday through Saturday; four or five runs on Sundays. Service increases significantly during the summer. Total travel time is 1 hr. 50 mins, and the ride is very scenic, particularly north of Gargnano.

Major stops (north to south):
Riva Bus Station (bus connections to Trento and elsewhere), Limone, Gargnano, Toscolano, Maderno, Fasano, Gardone Riviera (bus connections to Brescia), Salo, Desenzano Port, Desenzano Train Station (train connections to Milan, Verona, Venice and elsewhere).

Tickets should be purchased at authorized newsstands, tobacco shops and bars; on board the bus a supplement is charged. Heavy luggage can be stored in the baggage compartment.

Examine schedules carefully to note seasonality and days of operation ("fer." means Monday through Saturday; "fest." means Sunday; "gior." means daily). Website is updated for seasonal schedules.

There is also ferry and hydrofoil service from Riva to Desenzano, and points in-between. Ferries and hydrofoils are more expensive and take longer (particularly the ferry). www.navigazionelaghi.it

Hi,

We are basing in Verona and planning to see Lake Garda's eastern shore (all the way up to Riva) by bus per your suggestions, Bob and GAC. We had also planned to visit Trento by train on a different day, but a rail strike is planned for that day. Do you know of a bus line that goes somewhat directly from Verona to Trento? I didn't see one on the apt or saia websites (although my Italian is pretty pathetic). Or is there another bus line that goes into the Dolomites from Verona that you would recommend for an easy daytrip?

I don't believe that there are any regular buses between Trento and Verona, as train service is extremely frequent on this route. Also bear in mind that many announced train strikes are cancelled at the last moment, so it's useful to check the news frequently.

Having stated the above, it is possible to go between Verona and Trento by bus as follows:

1. APT Verona bus from Verona to Riva: 2 hrs., 10 mins.
2. Atesina bus from Riva to Trento:
1 hr. 15 mins.

The connection is at the Riva bus station. Total travel time, excluding connection, is 3 hrs., 25 mins. You need to schedule a reasonable connection in Riva, as incoming buses from the shores of Lake Garda are often late due to heavy traffic, and the connection itself is NOT guaranteed.

Obviously, a daytrip from Verona to Trento by bus which takes over 7 hours travel time (versus 2 hours by train) seems extremely long and difficult to justify (although the scenery is very nice indeed).

Another option is to take a fast hydrofoil from Garda to Riva, then proceed by bus to Trento. The Riva bus station is approx. 1 kilometer from the docks. You won't save any time, however.

Thanks. Sounds like a day to go to a winery or just hang around Verona. Could be worse.
