We're spending a week in Florence in September and plan to do two day trips to Tuscany. I read that it's better to take the bus to Siena and San Gimignano, which will be one day's trip. For the second day trip we'd like to go to Lucca. Is it better to take the bus or train to Lucca? Will either take us into the center of the town? We don't want the hassle of driving, so we're going to use public transportation. Is there any other Tuscany town that we shouldn't miss?

Don't know about the bus. But, we took the train from Florence to Lucca and it was fast enough for us, uneventful, not uncomfortable, and the Lucca station was within 10 minute walking distance to the toen center.

I agree with bill_boy. Short and inexpensive trip by train. Nice day trip, too...lovely city!

Definitely train and the station is opposite Lucca's main gate, Porta San Pietro and from there, a leisure 10 minute walk into the centre of the old city.

If you don't mind taking bus, the bus stop is right inside the walled-town, next to Tourist centre, much closer to the sightseeing sites. Once I stayed at Lucca for 4 nights, it was more convenient to travel by buses.

Bus travel from Lucca into areas such as the Garfagnana is best, but I would have to say that from Florence to Lucca, trains are faster and more frequent.

Oh, and it is a quick, nice and easy bus ride up to Fiesole. Just do be sure that the construction in Piazza Minno is over. Quite unsightly, but it should be finished.

From the train station, you walk through the wall to get into Lucca.
There is a tunnel.

To get to Fiesole, take the no. 7 bus from the SMN train station (1E 20 min).

You can watch the sun set over the city from the terrace of the Bar Bleu.

Fiesole also has interesting Etruscan ruins.
