Bundesliga ticket advice

I'd really love to attend a football game while I'm in Germany next month. Has anyone been to a match while traveling? Did you buy your tickets ahead of time or is it easy to get tickets when you're actually in Germany? Will the matches most likely be sold out now (I have no idea if I'm too late to even try to get tickets). I'm thinking Bundesliga in late September. I will be attending the game solo so I'm also wondering what to expect from the fans and the general atmosphere. Please keep in mind, I'm a weekly attendee of Red Sox games at Fenway Park, thus, I'm accustomed to passionate and crazed fans! (I mean that with much love, Boston!
As a solo, female traveler, I’m always aware of my safety, so I’m also wondering if the games are safe? I realize that this may sound like a silly question, but I’ve never been to Europe and I have no idea what to expect…aside from a good time, of course!

Depends on which team you'd want to see - and which side they are facing that particular day.
Munich is the most unlikely venue to catch a ticket for a match. Dortmund is usually quite sold out, too. For these venues it would not make much of a difference whether you'd book ahead of time or try to buy the tickets locally.

Where will you be travelling? If you indicate the region I might be able to give some more specific advice.

Hi and thanks for the info.

I'll be staying in Frankfurt (Eschborn to be exact) but I'm more than willing to take a day trip to see a game, as I've heard that European football is a fantastic experience!

Well that's quite central.

Frankfurt has built a new stadium, but Eintracht (local team) are still struggling a bit. I haven't been to the new stadium, so cannot comment.
Across the river, there is Mainz 05 playing. Very small stadium with a frenetic crowd supporting a team that has only participated in the highest league for two years and still likes to be the underdog in most any match. Most likely sold out permanently, though.

Stadiums I like best in the order of my preference: Hamburg (although I am biased as you can tell by my screen name, but even friends from other cities think that this might well be the best arena - and it is the only stadium where the stadium announcer performs live as a singer. "Hamburg meine Perle" makes the fans go wild pre-game) and Schalke (Gelsenkirchen) are at the top, followed by Dortmund. Munich and Berlin would follow.
I don't care for Wolfsburg (although the stadium isn't too bad, but the team isn't exactly the cream of the crop). The stadium in Hannover isn't too great either - and the same goes for Nuremberg and the Weser stadium in Bremen. As a team Bremen admittedly has quite an attractive style of play, though.
I cannot comment on the stadium in Cologne. Stuttgart suffers from a running track seperating the pitch from the stands (as is the case in Berlin, but the renovation of the Olympia stadium has been done quite nicely so that it doesn't destroy the experience that much.

I would try to go ahead and see the Eintracht Frankfurt in the new Commerzbank Arena (Waldstadium). I would definitely prefer to recommend Mainz but I don't think you will be able to get tickets, maybe there will be some scalping going on and you can pick up some tickets--totally campy stadium and great fans loyal to the team and Juergen Klopp, the very cute coach. I think that that the AOL Arena in Hamburg is great, renovated about four or five years ago! And the HSV fans are terrific -- but -- it is five hours up and five hours back to Frankfurt by car, a little less by train, so it is a haul. If you can do an overnight in Hamburg, it would be better!! Have fun whatever you do!

Frankfurt, Mainz and Hamburg are all safe. Mainz is so small that it will feel more like a high school football game. The only time I ever felt queasy at a football game was at St. Pauli (the other Hamburg team, now in the third division), and that was more out of a fear of getting puked on!! The HSV fans seem more civilized to me.
