budget scandinavia
Hello all Fodorites. I am planning a month travel in the Scandinavia countries from the end of July to August. I have quite a few questions.
(1) I would like to travel around Iceland for 10 days going through the main attraction places (due to short time). Would it be more economical for me to buy a bus pass (cost between euro 260-290) or buy individual tickets from one place to another.
(2) Also has anyone been to the Grimsey island at the north of Iceland? What would be the cheapest/easiest option to get there. (3) After Iceland I am also interested in going to the to the Faroe Islands. I know one can go by ferry, how many days does this take? or can I fly there? Which is cheapest/easiest?
(4)Another option (because of time constraint)is to completely skip the Faroes and fly straight to any one of the other Scandinavian states and spend the rest of the month in Norway/Sweden/Finland. Can anyone help advise me which option is better. HELP!!! Many thanks.

Message: Thanks Cobos. I would like to get into Norway by the cheapest and quickest way possible (possible??). It's asking too much, isn't it? Well what I mean as budget is to try and save as much by means of the cheapest or relatively cheapest way of travelling, i.e. I don't mind compromising on some things. And because time is a factor, the quickest way would help greatly. Many thanx.

I beleive the fastest and still pretty cheap (especially since you said time was of the essence) is to fly with icelandair from Iceland to Oslo Gardermoen. Also take a look at Icelandair's lucky fares they are sometimes very good deals. Then spend a few days in Oslo to take in the sites, among them Akershus fortress, the Royal castle, Kon-tiki and Viking museum at bygdøy, Vigeland sculpture park are good ones. I also suggest just walking around the Karl Johan area and Aker Brygge area (though take note that this is Oslo's most expensive area) and looking at the people and places is nice.
Take the train to Bergen either as a nighttrain to save time and money (I beleive nighttrain will save you money compared to Oslo's hotel f. inst.) or as part of the Norway in a nutshell tour. Then you can go further south or north depending on what kind of vacation you want. Remember that even in Oslo at early August it is still usually pretty nice temperature and dusk settles first around 11 and stays "dusky" for another hour or so
so lots of light.
Again I need more info to try to help you more specificly but take a look at Norways railcompanies webpage www.nsb.no as they have an english page. And also links to "Norway in a Nutshell" tour. Bus is generally cheaper than train, but I think it is a lot less comfortable.
