Hotel Galleria quoted me 200,000 lire for a room for 2 people. It's right on the Grand Canal and is a small budget hotel. You can do a search for the phone/fax/email address on this site or you can visit my travel page at http://www.luvtotravel.homestead.com/home.html (for hotel information, description, and location).

Hi

I stayed in a great budget place over New Years. Albergo Corona - a Rick Steve's pick. Very clean, central (5 mins from St. Marks) and cheap - 75K lire per night. The bathroom was next door - not in the room. The room was small though, but you will find that a lot...

check out Rick's book on Italy - I do not have it handy. If you email me I will look it up...

have fun!

Hotel Galleria is a budget hotel in an EXCELLENT location -- right by the Accademia Bridge, over which you can cross by foot and then you're in the San Marco district; AND also by the Accademia vaporetto stop so that you can easily get up/down the Grand Canal.

TWO CAVEATS on this hotel --
1. Do NOT stay in their one single room (I did) --- price was right, only 100,000 lire however the room is itsy bitsy & had the stale smell of smoke. How tiny you ask? Stretch out both your arms and you can touch the walls on either side. This particular room (cell?) does overlook the Grand Canal, which leads to caveat no. 2.
2. IF you're a light sleeper, you may not want one of the rooms that overlooks the Grand Canal. Yes, it's a room with a view. And a very interesting one, but because you're so close to the vaporetto stop & 98% of all boat traffic on Grand Canal is motorized, it can be noisy.

So I guess I'd give a qualified recommendation for this hotel (my visit to Venice was a few days this past October). All together I think there's 10 or 11 rooms --- some have their own bathroom & a few share the bathroom on the hall. Hallway bathroom was clean & tidy. Again, not terribly spacious but adequate. It ain't fancy & you drag your luggage up a curved stairway, but it does have "character".

You can e-mail them directly at:
[email protected]

have stayed at the galleria and found it to be ok. it certainly is convenient to the accademia bridge. have also stayed at locanda san trovaso (also in dorsuduro), a new seven room hotel at L200,000 per night with private bathroom. If the galleria is ten minutes from s. marco, the s. trovaso is twelve. i recommend. email me for details.
