We were in Budapest approx a year ago this time; we were there for 4 days. The Budapest portion of my trip report starts here:

I was in Budapest in November and had a wonderful time. Really enjoyed Regős Vendéglő Falatozó. Food was tasty and on the night we went, a Friday, it was full of locals clearly having a good time. Know it's cash only.

Also enjoyed Menza and Ket Szerecsen. Several people we met at the hotel raved about Klassz, but we didn't have a chance to go there ourselves.

We visited many of the places yk mentions in her trip report: highlights were the House of Terror (almost more of an installation art exhibit than a history museum complete with techno music and video, but definitely worth a visit), a ballet at the Opera House (loved it -- tickets were very inexpensive, the venue is gorgeous and we got to do the communist clap during five standing ovations), and had a great time at the Szechenyi Baths. The Central Market was also great fun to explore and we had a yummy lunch of goulash and a savory langos there. We also saw the traditional folklore show at Duna Palota (cheesy but entertaining) and went on the Legenda boat (views were lovely, but didn't really love this)

Budapest is a really interesting city with a lot to see. I found it less-compact for exploring on foot than I thought it would be (though public transportation is really easy to use), but fortunately it's also full of cafes with yummy coffee and cakes if you want to take a break and rest your feet. I can't wait to go back -- you're going to have a great time! enjoy!

Go to www.inyourpocket.com and get a guide for Budapest and you can decide for yourself what you want to see.

I have been to Budapest several times. It is one of my favorite cities, mainly because it is not as touristy. I always do most of the above, especially the House of Terror.
The Szechenyi bath house is most definitely my favoirte. Many people that I take there go kicking and screaming. They are very reluctant to go. Once they get in there, they leave kicking and screaming. It is hard to get my friends out of there!!
Also, I like Old Man's. It is on Ackafa ut. It is in a basement and has live music most nights. Get there early because it fills up. They have one of the best pizzas that I have ever had. The live music is fantastic. This is definitely a locals hang-out.
I also recommend to stay on the Pest side, as there is so much more to do there. I particularly like the Octogon area, near the Opera house.
A hike up Fishermans Wharf and then reward yourself with an ice cold beer while overlooking Parliament as it graces the Danube is as awesome ecperience.
This city is a walking city. It is VERY spread out, but worth it.
Good luck.

If you do a search for Budapest in the search box above you will get pages of Budapest posts that will be very helpful.

I love the city and did a trip report on my last visit with my mother. Vienna is in the first part, but you will eventually get tot the Budapest section.
