After looking at the map, that is even more crazy than I am! I like the way you think cdnyul, but that's a little to much driving for me.
I did look at going to Krakow, but couldn't make the flights work.
So far, I'm sticking with PalenQ's itinerary!

@Masterphil.
Not crazy at all. I just did that two weeks ago.
I don't want to write a trip report. but in a very short form here it is:
Flew from Montreal to Brussels,(no sleep, crying baby two rows ahead) picked up a SIXT rental at 09:00.
It was a Opel Corsa, a category of car that SIXT allows to enter Poland (see their web site).
Arrive at my hotel at Magenburg at around 18:00, had two coffees and three catnaps on the way. For you jet-lag is not an
issue
On the road at 06:30, met my daughter at Hotel Aida at 07:45, stoped on the road for breakfast, drove toward Wroclaw and visited Gross Rosen Concentration camp. Had a late lunch at Zajazd Azyl at Katy Wroclawskie, cheap and delicious.
Got stuck in a horrendous traffic jam on A4, total time to travel the last 270 kms, seven hours. Arrived at Best Wastern at 23:15. We stayed in Krakow 3 night, but two would have been sufficient.( We should have skipped Wieliczka, but to each his own)
We did do the usual Krakow things, plus the Matejko and Pharmacy museums, both on Florianska. Ate two times at Chata.
Left Krakow at 07:00 arrived in Oswiecim before the crowds, left around 13:30 arrived at Hotel Aida at around 20:00.
That area of Berlin is absolutely electric with late night activity. There was a one hour wait at the Hard Rock Cafe, but we were in a mood for Vietnamese anyway.
Left Berlin before 08:00, arrived in Brussels at 16:00.
I stayed at the Sleep and Go in Bad Hersfeld six years ago, clean and cheap, and about a 90 minute drive to FRA airport.

My suggestions would have been much different.>
Now that we're all friends I would be interested in what other routes you would recommend? (Spaarne is a wealth of info on Belgium and Holland IME). The one I outlined is I think the most direct route and none can be more scenic.

I waiting to hear too, Spaarne!
I am easily persuadable! </i>
Gents, I have been over busy with family health issues for the past week. I'll chime in this weekend.

Mark...I'm looking at 2 hours max in a car from Bruges to Frankfurt over 5 nights.
Thought about going from Bruges to Rheims and then to Trier, but those were 3 hour drives which I didn't want to do.
Krakow is on the "to do" list for another time.
spaarne...hope all is well!

2 hrs on autobahns or autoroute (freeways) can always mean more due to not unusual IME traffic backups - optimal time of 2 hours yes but realistic maybe more if say going to Reims from Bruges means skirting the Brussels conurbation at busy periods.

Need to put my trip report together, but we wound up staying at Hotel Prinzenhof in Bruges. Day 2 got in the car in Bruges (which was an absolutely lovely little town) and drove through lots of construction to Ghent. Ghent was a lot more crowded than Bruges with a lot more construction going on, so we didn't find it as cozy as Bruges. After Ghent, we drove to Rochefort. Rochefort was a nice little town, we walked around and had a Trappist Rochefort 8 beer. Then it was back on the road to Bouillon. Bouillon looked like a great little town, but it looked like it was off season or something. Things looked closed and it didn't look too exciting. We decided to get on the road and head to Trier. (Stayed at the Park Plaza Hotel) Trier was a great town (great for shopping that is! My wife found some beautiful clothes in an upscale shop near Porta Negra). The next night we stayed in Bernkastle-Kues (Hotel Doctor Weinstrube) (the night before Winefest was about to kick off). Here we met some wonderful people from Gainesville, FL who make the trek to Winefest every year (and have been doing it for the past 10 years). As a guy who never liked Riesling wine, they gave me quite an education and a gracious sharing of their special vintage Rieslings that were surprisingly fantastic! Doctor Weinstrube restaurant was outstanding! Lunch special was schnitzel with fried onions with melted cheese on top and mushroom sauce with German-style potatoes! Hands down, the best meal in Europe! Ediger-Eller (short stop) was next followed by Cochem. Cochem was a bit of a let down (maybe because it was kind of more of the same (small town Mosel Valley). (Stayed at Hotel am Markt) Finally it was a stay at Hilton airport Hotel (which was a nice wind down in preparation for flight home and a airport restaurant near Hilton that had great burgers and fries better than we had in Belgium (which were also a let down!). PalenQ...thank's for the itinerary! We had a pleasant stay. Wife and I rated our itinerary in this order: 1) Santorini Greece (Canaves Suites!!) 2) Bruges 3) Tuscany 4) Mosel Valley 5) Ghent 6) Rome (I didn't like Rome the first time I went there. I still don't like it!)
