Bruges, Bruges, Bruges, Bruges - for heavens sake Bruges - you will just not regret it.
I am off there at the end of this month - there is the procession of the Holy Blood which is a pageant that I haven't previously seen.
National day in July - all the residents go to the main Markt square and sing their hearts out!!
Venice of the north with its' lovely canals. Wonderful history. In three years of monthly visits there are still places I want to go back to or haven't yet explored enough in the city.
Sit on a terrace and drink one of the worlds great beers. Eat mussels and frites. Life is perfect.
This tourist link gives more than enough information. Have a great time

Had three days in Belgium and had planned to go to Brussels, Bruges, Ghent and Antwerp. We ended up with Brussels, Bruges and Ghent...and Amsterdam.
I would recommend Ghent over Bruges if you want beauty and a pleasant city. It is very similar to Bruges but has like 10% of the crowds...that may be hyperbole but not by much. However, Bruges has more museums that are worth seeing.
Having seen both and if I had to pick for the first time now, I'd go with Ghent.
Obviously, Brussels did not overly impress except for use as a base city.
