Even if you are not much for museums, the Van Gogh Museum and the Anne Frank House are, IMHO, two "do not miss" places in Amsterdam.

IMHO Brussels is more a government center and less for a tourist.

But in both places almost everyone will speak English - I have never met anyone in Amsterdam that didn't - even a local postman we asked directions of.
