twoflower & co. - by Clark Griswold standards (Chevy Chase in European Vacation), you have done pretty well negotiating roundabouts; semiramis - perhaps you'd better put off watching European Vacation until after your trip.
In my part of the world the main problem with roundabouts is that they encourage chicane-like aggressive passing manoeuvres. No doubt the British are better behaved.

Semiramis, you might try Enterprise Rent-a-car. My sister and I drove the entire Island about five years ago and put a you-know-what load of miles on our car, but we got unlimited mileage, so that worked out great. We picked our car up at the location at Elephant and Castle. I actually made the reservation through a local location here in the states. It couldn't have been easier. That being said, it took us an hour to get out of London! Yep, those pesky roundabouts! However, I agree with a few previous posters, once you get the hang of it, they actually seem really easy and efficient. Then, once you get on the highway, you're golden! By the way, I'm not sure how far north you're going, but if you go on up to Scotland, take the Cumberland Forest way. It's beautiful!
